Sharing Custom Templates and other Configuration Data

This article will explain how to share, export or set a custom directory for your Custom Configurations.

Where is my Custom Configuration Stored?

By default, your custom templates are stored in:

Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10:

C:\Programdata\Innovasys\DocumentX2019\templates - For Document! X Users

C:\Programdata\Innovasys\HelpStudio2019\templates - For HelpStudio Users

Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Innovasys\DocumentX2019\templates  - For Document! X Users

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Innovasys\HelpStudio2019\templates  - For HelpStudio Users

Using a custom directory for your configuration

In the 2018 versions of Document! X and HelpStudio you can configure a custom directory to store your configuration in. This option can be found in the application Options, Paths page:

Sharing your configuration manually

Some users wish to share a number of customized files with team members - such as custom widgets, custom templates, and custom content types.

All you need to do is simply copy the files located in the above directory into the same directory on your team members computers to give them access to your templates. If you do make any further changes, you will need to repeat the process.

Using Source Control to automatically share your configuration

Some users have found success in mapping the configuration directory to a source control folder so that the configuration can be checked out / shared in a team; i.e. map the configuration directory referenced above to a location in source control so that team members can access, update and share common configuration files.

This can be done manually by adding the custom template directory to your source control provider. Any get latest, check out and check in operations will need to be performed manually using your source control provider client.

Using a cloud storage service to share your configuration

The option to set a custom directory for your configuration can be used to good effect if you are working in a team environment and subscribe to a cloud service such as OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox etc.

Change the local configuration directory to be a directory beneath your cloud service root directory and you can then use the cloud service sharing functionality to backup and synchronize the configuration with other team members.
