Backing Up Projects

This quick tip will explain how to backup your Document! X and HelpStudio Projects. This is essential if you are not using Source Control to avoid data loss.

The files you need to back up would be

  1. The .dxp file (for Bundle users and Document! X users) or the  .hsp file (for HelpStudio users).
  2. Any .dxc files (for Document! X users)
  3. Any .dxl or .hsl file (If you use localization features)
  4. Any "Other files" - such as images, stylesheets etc. that you can see referenced by the project on the Other Files part of the Project Explorer.

All of these files are located in the Project directory. For non project related settings, such as custom templates, you would need to backup the following folder:

Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10:

C:\Programdata\Innovasys\DocumentX2019\templates

Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Innovasys\DocumentX2019\templates

You can also use Source Control to backup your Project Files - you can find out more information in our online help here:

Furthermore, you can also use Source Control to share your custom templates between your team members using the instructions in this knowledge base article:

At present you would need to use a GitHub client manually to store / read your project with GitHub. We do support a range of other Source Control providers and plan to directly support GitHub in a future update.
