Automating Help builds through Visual Studio

The development staff I support want to be able to automatically generate compiled Help (CHM and HTML output) on a controlled basis - when they build a solution, the associated Help builds. They currently do this with sandcastle and another tool (trial version).

I have built the integrated doc x project file (Visual Studio and Doc X) and demonstrated the use of the comment editor. My last hurdle to get dev buy-in is to demonstrate that they can generate a Help build automatically when the solution builds. Is this possible and can someone point me to documentation so I can make my case.

Visual Studio 2008, Doc X 2008, .NET Assembly as source.

  Comprehensive support for unattended documentation builds is provided through the Document! X Automation license, which is available free with a team license of 5 or more Document! X licenses, or available for purchase separately if you hold less than 5 licenses (contact sales@innovasys.com for more details on that). The Automation License includes:

  1. A Command Line build utility (with source code provided).
  2. Access to the Document! X COM APIs for more low level integration.
  3. Innovasys Support for use of Document! X in an automated build environment.
  4. Entitlement to install Document! X on up to 2 'build machines' plus a third machine for interactive work (if purchased separately).

  An MSBuild task is also available as part of the automation license, on request.

  For the benefit of anyone coming across this post, our 2012.1 version includes command line build, an MSBuild Task and a Tfs Activity for build integration. This capability is available with all licenses.
