New template and source control

Hi,

I've created a new template which is working fine except it doesn't seem to have made its way into source control (we are using VS2008 / Team Foundation Server). I say this because my colleague doesn't have it on his system, i.e. in Tools > Options > Templates he only has the standard set of templates. However the use of the new template has propergated into other areas and when my colleague opens the project he gets an error message saying the new template cannot be found and features of the new template, e.g. help page header, do not appear in his version of the help project.

How can I force the new template into source control?

  Hello,

  The templates are stored seperately from the Project and need adding to source control manually. I'm afraid you would also need to check Templates in and out manually. You can find your Template directory here:

  • XP - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\innovasys\documentx5\templates
  • Vista - C:\ProgramData\innovasys\documentx5\templates

  Hi Mike,

  Thanks for that. Is there a method within Help Studio we can use add our new template into source control? If not, what is the recommended way of doing this within VS2008. I had a look at doing this manually using Source Code Explorer > Add items to folder.. but that didn't seem to fit the bill. When I selected all the items in our new template folder to copy into source control 110 items where excluded (they seemed like gif and other image files),

  Hi Mike,

  I'm not adding the templates into source control - that's the problem - I don't know how to. What I'm looking for is instructions on how to add my new template into source control so that it's sharable with my colleague.

  There is no functionality in HelpStudio for adding the Template files to source control. If you wanted to do that you would need to do it manually and the process will be something specific to the Source Control system you are using. Do you have a Source Control admin individual there who could help you with this?

  Hi Richard,

  We are using VS2008 and Team Foundation Server for source control.

  What I tried was:

  Open Source Code Explorer

  Right click on the source trunk and selected Add items to folder

  Navigated to the folder that contains my new template: C:\ProgramData\innovasys\documentx5\templates\TMSIcon

  The Select Items list shows all the items in the folder with the exception of the file types list in: "Automatically exclude from source control"

  Ctrl A to select all items in the list.

  Clicked Next.

  I now have a list of 162 items selected and 0 items not selected. In a previous message I said I had 110 items in the not selected tab. This didn't happen this time so and I've no idea what I did differently.

   So now I'm ready to click Finish which I didn't do last time because of the 110 items not selected.

  However, I won't click Finish just yet. Are the steps outlined above correct for adding a new template into source control?

  That sounds correct to me (we use TFS here and that is what I would do). When you are getting the copy on your colleagues machine just be sure to set the correct local path so the files are copied to the right folder.
